WYP2016 Speaker Spotlight

Fleming_tightThis week, I would like to introduce you to Malica Fleming. She’s the Blogger In Chief and the Founder of Finer Women Rising. Both creative and analytical, her insight on building a following through blogging is refreshing. Grab some coffee and meet the woman behind the blog.

How did your earlier career choices lead you to where you are now? Learning from my past mistakes with complacency is one choice that has let me to where I am now. What has also helped lead me to where I am now is the ability to be flexible and willingness to take on stretch responsibilities. And although it sounds like a cliche’ – being a team player and known as someone who is always willing to help others goes a long way. People don’t forget that and it has led to me being recommended for some amazing positions that I might not have been exposed to otherwise.

What career mistake has given you the biggest lesson? The biggest career mistake I made was becoming complacent. In many of my previous positions, I became too comfortable and I wasn’t motivated to grow skill-wise or salary-wise as quickly as I was truly capable of.

What is the biggest risk that you’ve taken?
The biggest risk that I’ve taken was leaving the IT company that I had grown extremely comfortable with. I was with this particular company for 7 years and when I finally woke up and mustered the courage to leave, I was blessed with a job that paid me $20,000 more than what I was making. I had become so comfortable with the company that I didn’t even realize what my skills were worth because I had stopped asking.

What is the biggest challenge to achieving success?
I believe the biggest challenge to achieving success is ourselves and our mindset. Once we get our of our own way – we can achieve anything we desire – I firmly believe that. We can be our very best blessing or own own worst enemies.

Who are you without your accolades?
Without my accolades, I’m not very different. I’m the down-to-earth, shy, sometimes silly, girl from Queens. Accolades are always appreciated, but I am a whole and complete woman without them.
