Work Your Package™ – Perseverance

Work Your Package™ – Perseverance

Work Your Package logo_v9 Perseverance – Failure can be disappointing, but not nearly as much as the regret you will feel if you give up.

With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable. ~ Thomas Foxwell Buxton

I’ll admit, this post is difficult for me to write. I haven’t always done what I’ve advised others to do. As a matter of fact, I’ve come up short too many times to count. I’ve thrown in the towel and completely given up because the task was too difficult or emotionally painful to complete. I’ve talked myself out of going forward and being “okay” with mediocrity. I’ve applied logic to ridiculous thoughts of completion just because I just didn’t want to do the work.

No one said that reaching a meaningful goal or working towards greater aspirations would be easy, but it will be worth it. You’ve heard that motivational quote hundreds of time but have you internalized it? It’s taking me long to realize that hard work must be applied to all aspects of your life, not just your job.

Before you tackle any goal you have to start with the mindset that you will complete it. No, it won’t be easy. Yes, there will be times you will want to give up. Decide beforehand you will not give up. Decide beforehand you will be hard on yourself when it’s just laziness, but kind to yourself when you are honestly burnt out and need to regroup. Be honest with yourself and know you might not have a team of people cheering you on to the finish line. You may have to be a one-person cheer squad…make sure you get some pompoms in advance.  Perseverance requires you to continue and push forward even when there are insurmountable obstacles.  I hope you make the choice not to give up. Now if you will excuse me, I have some pompoms to dust off.

Work Your Package™ – Rare

Work Your Package™ – Rare

Work Your Package logo_v9Today I was stretched, once again, beyond my comfort zone and it was right on time for this week’s edition of Work Your Package™ Wednesday.

Rare—It is rare to find the courage to travel down the path that your talent will take you. Dare to be different.

Before I get started, I don’t want you to think of me as being a braggart or full of myself. Up until a few years ago, I didn’t acknowledge all of my skills even when others did. At some point, and I can’t tell you when, I realized that being humble wasn’t congruent with how others perceived me.  I was perceived by others as being capable, articulate, creative, compassionate, funny, supportive, witty, focused, a loyal friend, a great event planner, a good presenter and most recently, a good writer. I’m sure there are some negative perceptions of me as well but I’ve chosen to focus on the positive.

It takes courage to develop a part of you that others have complimented you on but you don’t yet see what they see. I think it’s human nature to think that people are just being polite and don’t want to hurt your feelings by telling you the truth that your presentation at the staff meeting was really terrible. But if you make it a habit to surround yourself with people who tell you the truth with love and respect and not with malice, you need to trust that they see your talent and all that it can become. The only thing that holds us back from going down a path that our talent leads us to is fear. The only thing worse than failure is regret. Take the chance to see where your talent will lead you even if you don’t feel that it has been fully developed.  Truth be told, even world-renowned opera singers still take vocal lessons.

Talent is a universal gift, but it takes a lot of courage to use it. DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE THE BEST. ~ Paulo Coelho

You’re Writing a Book?

You’re Writing a Book?

That was the response I received from many people when I told them I was writing a book. The book that I’ve been writing for the past eight years. The book that I diligently (well not that diligently) write chapters for on a mostly weekly basis. Sometimes the response is complete shock. Sometimes its complete admiration. Either way, I started telling people about the book so that they would keep asking me the million dollar question…So have you finished your book? It keeps the pressure on me to keep writing and to keep developing the story line and characters. It wasn’t my aspiration when I was younger to be an author, but now that I’ve started to share what I’m doing, it is a goal that I must see to completion.

Writing is stretching me creativity in a way that I’m not accustomed but its becoming familiar. I actually like doing the research involved for the book to make sure that when someone reads it, my words are so descriptive, it takes them to the location I’m writing about.  The more I write, the more I tune into my inner voice, the voice that I hush and tell to be quiet when I’m having a conversation with someone. The voice that just wants to say what is on her mind without hesitation or reservations.  When I’m stuck for the “right” words to say, my inner voice gives me an entire dialog that I wouldn’t have thought of.  I salute all of the writers who write on a daily basis. I wish I had that luxury. I’ve often thought about getting a modified work schedule so that I could have a day off during the week to focus solely on writing. But until that becomes a reality, I steal away a few hours here and there while I take care of work, home, kids, husband, friends and family. I’m dead last on that list and my inner voice is pissed about it because she has so much to say…
